Why YOU Should Care:

If you misplace a tax return after filing, you can contact the IRS about obtaining a copy of the information filed.

What is a Transcript?

A transcript is a computer-generated record of a tax return. It includes most line items from the original return and shows the amounts as filed with the IRS at that time. A transcript will provide the same information as was filed on the original tax return just in a different format. Any changes made by the taxpayer or tax return preparer after filing are not shown.

Tax Return Transcript – This shows most line items from your original return, including any additional schedules.

Tax Account Transcript – This shows basic data from your return, including marital status, type of return filed, adjusted gross and taxable income.

Both formats are available for the current and previous three years.
