Why YOU Should Care:

Direct Pay provides you an easy, free way to pay the IRS. You may have previously signed up for EFTPS, but Direct Pay is far simpler – there’s no more need for advance registration!

What kinds of payments can I make with IRS Direct Pay?

Direct Pay lets you make a payment towards:

  • Individual Income Tax Returns – Forms 1040 – for the past 20 years
  • Extensions for your current tax year
  • Estimated Taxes

Additional forms may be added in the future.

How do I use Direct Pay?

Each time you use Direct Pay you will verify your identity using data from one of your tax returns from the past five years. You will then enter your bank information, the amount owed, and schedule the payment. You can schedule future payments if applicable, but, at this point, you can only schedule one payment at a time. If your situation requires recurring payments, you will have to log on each time a payment is required.

Once you receive confirmation from Direct Pay that the payment has been accepted, make note of your confirmation number and keep your eye on your bank account. The amount of the payment should be deducted in the next two business days.
